For all of his bravado, Sam Markov wasn't always such a big shot. In fact, most people would have considered him outright unremarkable in his younger years. Sure, he was a decent athlete, but it's not like the Bucs were winning competitions solely on the back of his performances. Nor was he super "in" with the rest of the team socially speaking.
Then out of nowhere, she became one of the most successful fencers in the entire state. Or maybe even the entire country, if she gets the chance to prove herself. If you believe the official story, then she's a testiment of what hard work and intense training can get you. If you believe the rumors, then she's almost certainly been having her matches fixed.
For once, the truth is far more interesting; Sam was approached a few years back by a mysterious sponsor, who promised him great power and wealth in exchange for a favor to be repaid later. With no better options, he took the offer without question, getting his wish at the cost of forever altering how he saw the world.
And now, the sponsor has requested Sam's presence back in her hometown of Bedford...
