Santiago Reyes-Machado doesn't believe in chance, but even he can't deny he's had an unusual run of rotten luck. Born with one foot in the grave to a poor family, he didn't have a lot of advantages growing up. Most of the other kids didn't get along with him either. But he still had a few friends, including Selby. Of course, of all of Selby's friends, Santiago just had to be the one who was there when it happened. For the longest time, Santiago wasn't sure if what he saw that day was real, or just a bad dream.At least he still had Cassandra. Well, until she became the most popular girl and school and suddenly didn't have time to associate with someone like him. Figures. It would be easy to be angry, to want to tear down the world for everything it had done to him. But destruction doesn't mean anything unless he could help people.
He got his wish after returning to Bedford. He could still see them lurking in the shadows. The things he'd been trying to ignore for years. That understanding was what finally gave him the power to fight back. Even if the rest of the world could never understand the war he was fighting.
